Business Cards as an Icebreaker

Online dating has become a gigantic industry to be a part of, whether as a business or as a dater. A lot of people are on these sites are there simply out of curiosity – but what about when online dating aficionados go out to a local pub or club – they can’t really tell people what their Match.com screen name is. That’s where a new website called cheek’d that mixes online dating with the idea behind handing out business cards.

The idea behind cheek’d is rather intriguing – instead of handing out personalized business cards to a person you’re interested in when you’re out, you hand out cards with a unique ID code and a random saying on them. If the recipient is interested, they can go to the cheek’d website and enter your ID in to get more information about you. It’s a lot like checking out a business’s website from a card that you found or were given at a professional business event.

Business and dating have a lot in common – particularly when it comes to building relationships. Excepting online dating, business cards can be a great way to inject your brand and ideas into the memory of a potential client or other successful business person you may run into. In these cases, make sure your card has a few key features:

• Professional design and quality – Get your card looked at by a designer or a few friends, depending on your budget. You can never have enough eyes on your card for both business and design reasons.

• High-grade materials – Your card should give off an air of class and dignity, so use a high quality stock with color ink and a few features like embossed and/or raised print.

• Appropriate background image – Make sure your card has a background image that relates to your line of business or personality – this will help establish your brand image.
